ONE GREAT DAY

One Great Day is going to be a little different this year.  Not in purpose, but in focus.  As I am sure you know, the purpose of One Great Day is to serve the community in a way that demonstrates our love for Bowling Green that points to the love we receive in Christ.  Our hope is always in doing our project that someone might ask why, so that we would have a bridge to share the gospel.  In many cases our service is left as our testimony instead.

In the past, we have always created 50-75 projects all around town and each small group took one project.  Sometimes there were a few that required multiple groups.  By taking on a lot of smaller projects, we were able to help and provide that testimony in a lot of specific places.  This year we are intensifying our focus on three specific places, Bowling Green High School, Hope House, and WKU.  By focusing on these three places we are able to take on much bigger tasks and create a testimony that will shout much louder the love God has for these places.  Each of these three projects are bigger than any 1 project we have taken on before, so we need every small group to be involved.

Projects

Painting the Halls of Bowling Green High School
Bowling Green High School has almost 7,000 linear feet of walls in their hallways!  That more than 1.3 miles of wall and we’re going to paint every bit of it. This gives our church a chance to show a high school that is less than half a mile away to we love them, care about them and more importantly God does too.  And we can do that by accomplishing a few small tasks.
  • Paint all of the hallways
  • Create encouragement bags for each of the staff members
  • Pray as we paint for the students and teachers in the school
Even though these are simple tasks we are asking for a team of 500 people!  We will need a prep team to start on Friday at 3:30pm by taping and putting plastic down.  Then we will have the paint team on Saturday morning from 8:00-12:00.  We will also have an encouragement team that will put together bags and notes during the morning paint time.  We also would like to offer childcare at Living Hope during the paint times if a couple small groups will serve in that capacity.  Please indicate on the card how your group will serve.  You will need to bring brushes and rollers if you have them.  We will have some tools there, but can’t buy enough for everyone so please bring any tools you can.

Continued Renovation at Hope House
As of August 25th, Hope House has been open for exactly 1 year.  What a blessing it has already been in our community!  The Lord is moving through their ministry and we want to be a part of it.  One way we can serve them is by helping them continue to make their facility more welcoming and usable.  We need 100 people to serve Hope House this One Great Day.  Teams will help complete the following tasks:
  • Build two raised flower beds in the entrance.
  • Paint the exterior trim and facia boards.
  • Paint and clean inside.
Free Laundry at WKU
Every year thousands of college students come to Bowling Green to learn at WKU.  Many students live in one of the dorms on campus.  We are going to offer to do their laundry.  For a college student that will be One Great Day.  It is a simple way we can serve them and show that we know they are here and care about them.  This is a simple option that everyone can participate in, even if you are doing one of the other projects.  Here’s how it will work.

  1. Friday Afternoon (9/24) our college ministry students will get the laundry from the dorm lobbies and take it to the Baptist Campus Ministry building on Normal Drive.
  2. Anyone willing to do a load of laundry can go by the BCM building from 4:00pm to 7:00 that night to pick up.
  3. Take the laundry home to wash and fold it.
  4. Sunday Morning bring the laundry back with you to church
  5. Sunday afternoon our college ministry students will return it to the students in their dorms.

As the students return the clothes, we will be putting a book and some materials in their bag about Living Hope and the gospel.  This gives our students a prime chance to share their faith with their peers in their dorm.  This is a great chance for everyone to take part in gospel work by simply serving our campus.

Registration

Click Here for a card that is the primary means for communicating with the missions department on what project(s) your group will be participating in.  It is important that we know your participation so we can make appropriate plans at each job site to accommodate your group.  The card is very simple. You fill in your name, contact information and group information.  Then check the box(es) that tell us your participation.  You are permitted to break your group up and serve at different projects if needed.  You can also serve at multiple projects, such as the painting and laundry.  Make sure to clarify how many will participate with each so we can plan.  Feel free to make any comments or questions on the card. You can drop the card off at the front office during the week or the One Great Day table on Sundays.

As always, if you have any questions or comments before September 25th. Please contact me at sborders@lhbg.org or call the missions office at 843.9462
